The 4th entry of my surface pattern design challenge is finally here and it was probably the challenge I was most excited about. If you want to enter the design challenge you can still do so by visiting the link about and posting your pattern to Instagram with the hashtag #kmpdesignchallenge.

This is one of those references that you will only get if you were alive and cognizant in the 70s or you are a huge music fan like me. The song challenge was the hardest design challenge so far because most songs aren’t very visual. If I had more time, there is a line in across the universe by the Beatles that says, “words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,” that I have always wanted to illustrate, however, this is what I came up with.

If you couldn’t tell by the what I was depicting, the pattern features a bunch of clouds all in the shape of an alligator, a reference to America’s song Ventura Highway. Originally, I planned on doing a whole Ventura scene since America does a great job of describing the atmosphere of Venture in that song. There’s one line in particular that refers to “alligator lizards in the air” so I wanted to take that line and expand it to multiple different animal shaped clouds. That idea did not pan out so I stuck with just the alligator. That is how this simple little pattern came to be.

Did you guess the song this pattern was based on? If you did, I am very impressed.
