Welcome to the second installment of my Surface Pattern Design Challenge. If you want to see a full list of challenges click here. It’s not too late to join the challenge. You can do so by tagging your designs with the hashtag #kmpdesignchallenge. Without Further ado, let’s get into it.
This design challenge has proven to be a big commitment. I had the hardest time with this challenge trying to figure out which movie I wanted to base my pattern on. My original thought was to create a sort of tweens party type scene like in Ms. Doubtfire or go with the comforting yet hilarious grandmother vibe, but after a few minutes of brainstorming, I scraped it. Creating illustrations from real movies is always going to be harder to illustrate so I decided to go with an animated movie instead.
I like to call this my low budget little mermaid. Just look at my interpretation of Flounder and you will get what I am saying but I’ve heard that Disney has a great legal team and did not want to be on the wrong side of a copyright lawsuit. I have been experimenting with some illustrator tools I haven’t really got a chance to use, most notably the draw inside tool, and this is what I came up with.
For those of you who are not familiar with The Little Mermaid, I did not make a mistake. A little mermaid pattern wouldn’t be the same without a dinglehopper or two so that is why there is a random fork in the pattern.
So that’s my pattern. In the spirit of Disney, what is your favorite Disney movie?

This is really cool! I also like to graphic design!

I guessed little mermaid from the title and picture so you must be doing something right!
It was the fork + mermaid tail that helped. 🙂

Yep, I feel like the fork gives it away but I always forget that not everyone is as big of a Disney fan as I am.
